In the late 1700s Chatoyer was
the Paramount Chief of the Carib Indians and Garifuna or Black Caribs on the island we call St. Vincent. He was killed in the anticolonial war of 1795. He was selected as the first "National Hero" of Saint Vincent and the Grenadines in 2001. There is a copy of this painting by Agusto Brunias in the Kingstown Public Library.
